What does this guide solve?

MariaDB evolved from MySQL but is now a distinct platform. Production design should separately evaluate version compatibility, InnoDB workload, Galera requirements and security/encryption features.

Operating system

MariaDB is commonly deployed on Linux through apt/dnf/yum packages, and Windows packages also exist.

On Linux, SELinux/AppArmor, filesystem and systemd integration should be part of operating standards.

CPU, memory and storage

For InnoDB-heavy systems, memory/buffer pool and low-latency storage are foundational. CPU sizing follows concurrency and query complexity.

Enterprise SSD/NVMe, safe write cache and measured IOPS/latency matter for transaction-heavy systems.

TLS and encryption

MariaDB provides TLS for data in transit and plugin-based encryption for data at rest. MariaDB 11.4+ introduced important secure-connection improvements.

The active TLS library and key-management model should align with organisational security standards.

Privileges and OS security

Do not run the database process as root; use least-privilege database accounts, network segmentation and strong credential policy.

Tune SELinux policies rather than disabling them.

HA and Galera

Asynchronous replication fits classic read/DR scenarios; Galera Cluster can be evaluated for selected multi-primary/synchronous HA designs.

Galera is sensitive to latency and write-conflict patterns, so geo-distance and workload should be piloted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is MariaDB identical to MySQL?

No. They share origins but features and version behaviour have diverged; migrations should be tested.

Is TLS enabled by default in MariaDB?

Behaviour varies by version; 11.4+ improved secure connections. Always verify the active TLS state.

Is Galera suitable for every HA scenario?

No. Write latency, conflicts and inter-node network latency must fit the model.
